How is NYU as a program? I know historically it was a bit malignant, and is more of an operative powerhouse now. Given their smaller complement of residents, 16-18, what is their call schedule like? Are there opportunities for research throughout the years?
The answer is bad and worse. You don't get to operate like crazy in NYC and also do significant research. They work hard and become great surgeons, but they don't become great scientists. For what it's worth, you can't get high surgical volume without high clinical volume (read: scutwork) unless you're at a place that's flush with APPs (mayo, BNI). Great program for some ppl, probably not for others
